The WELL Building Standard™
The WELL Building Standard™ focuses on the public benefits of health and is especially concerned with the well-being of people within our built environment. More specifically, IWBI™ uses performance based criteria to measure the features of a building that contribute to the overall wellness benefit of those that live, work or learn within the building.
While the more commonly recognized LEED certification focuses on the performance of the building itself, the WELL Building Standard™ outlines guiding principles for the interactions of people within the built environment. The aim of the WELL Building Standard™ is to promote the influence that a buildings construction, layout, material and features can have on the overall health and well-being of the people within the building, while working to improve upon their health and wellness.
The WELL Certified™ Silver Rating
The WELL Certified™ Silver rating received for the IREM® headquarters is the first of its kind in the Chicago market. In fact, as of this post, it is only one of 9 national awards and 12 internationally recognized buildings.
The WELL Certified™ Silver rating of the IREM® Chicago headquarters directly relates to a number of building features, including:
- Specialty lighting aimed at reducing energy costs and enhancing comfort
- Ergonomic and flexible workstations
- Optimized fresh-air on-demand delivery mechanisms
- ENERGY STAR appliances, equipment and workstation lighting
- Sensors that help control lighting efficiencies
- Office cues to encourage healthy eating
IREM® & GNP – Leading the Way for Improved Occupant Health
IREM®, our partner in this project, is an association for multi-family residential and commercial real estate managers and professionals. They actively promote the adherence to ethical industry guidelines, sharing of resources and best practices, and improving real estate performance and values for their members. In pursuing the WELL Building Standard™, IREM® has helped to set a precedent for similar business associations, as well as member organizations, in prioritizing the well-being of their staff and the future direction of the industry.
As our own vice president of Project Management & Development, John Gagliardo, said “Workplace well-being is an exploding industry and we’re excited to be one of the first in the industry to embrace the standard, but more importantly, to execute it.”
